I was lucky enough to get to celebrate the New Year skiing in the French Alps! And it was just as awesome as it sounds :) I went to visit my friends Vicky and Jon who just moved there last month. They live in Morzine, France near the border with Switzerland. I took the train to Geneva, Switzerland to meet them.
New Years Eve Day we went skiing! The weather wasn't too great. It was snowing and cloudy the whole day so we couldn't see too much. But it was an awesome powder day! It had snowed through the night so most runs we went on were untouched. It was so cool to leave out tracks, especially when we fell down. Everyone here kept telling me that it is different than skiing in the States. Luckily, Vicky and Jon already know their way around pretty well. So I just played tag along and followed them through the powder.
And we obviously didn't have any fun counting down the last seconds of 2011 going out that night :) There was no NYC ball drop showing and no champagne toast. Tough life.
We managed to get up early to get on the slops on New Years Day. It started out cloudy but towards the afternoon time I could see this. Mountains all through the horizon is my favorite sight to look at. Skiing here is my new favorite place probably. The whole area is connected. You can even ski into Switzerland (we didn't though, the weather wasn't ever too great). You could go hours and hours through hundreds of kilometers of runs. It's so cool. It's pretty confusing to navigate through though so thankfully I could just be the follower.
The town in the valley is Morzine. It is of course a cute little ski town.
And this is us in the town.
This is from New Years Day. It was a great way to start the year! Thanks so much Vicky and Jon for letting me visit - I had a blast! I wish I was still there! Enjoy your season in the Alps!
Can you see those mountatins in the way back left hand corner? So awesome!
This photo is from Geneva. We spent an afternoon playing around there before I caught my train back to Germany. Just like everywhere else in Switzerland, it is so lovely there with a huge lake. The lake is actually the border with France. So in one area if you're standing on the Swiss side, you look across the lake at France. Cool, huh? And Lake Geneva is where Evian water comes from - in this tiny little town in the French Alps.
So I had an incredible New Years celebration in the mountains with friends :) It is going to be hard to have another New Years as great as this one was. This trip set quite a high bar for what I hope 2012 will bring. It was also the perfect ending to an absolutely incredible year in 2011.
I hope you all enjoyed celebrating the start of a new year too and are hopeful to the opportunities to come. Miss y'all!
